Solution mining

Solution mining can substitute for conventional shaft mining in some potash deposits at depths of more than 1,100m, which is the current limit for conventional potash mining. It is not an all-encompassing mining alternative to be used whenever potash zones are too deep or too variable for conventional mining methods.

Deep Mining: A Rock Engineering Challenge

 — Increasing demand for metals caused by global economic growth and exploitation of shallow mineral deposits forces mineral extraction to go deeper. A direct consequence of this development is an increase in rock pressure-related mining problems. The role of rock engineering in the design and operation of deep mines is discussed in …

How Mining Helps to Fill the Salt Shaker

 — Deposits are reached through a circular shaft, typically about 20 feet in diameter and as deep as 2,000 feet, depending on the depth and location of the salt deposit. Mining methods depend on whether the salt is configured as a relatively horizontal sedimentary deposit or a more vertical salt dome. The differences in mining methods …

Salt Production and Processing

Most mine shafts are lined with a concrete wall called a shaft liner. Salt is mined by the room and pillar method. It is removed in a checkerboard pattern to leave permanent, solid salt pillars for mine roof support. Usually 45 to 65 percent of the salt is removed. The room height may average 18 feet in a bedded deposit to 100 feet in a dome mine.

Basic Methods of Salt Production

 — Rock salt (also known as halite) is present in the rocky under layers of the Earth's surface and can be extracted through deep-shaft mining. These large deposits of salt are the result of ancient underground waterways that have long since dried up.
