On the mechanism of exfoliation of 'Vermiculite'

This mechanism provides a common explanation for the exfoliation of 'Vermiculite' by thermal methods or by treatment with H 2 O 2. Paradoxically, one sample which consists of pure vermiculite, in the mineralogical sense of the term, demonstrates that pure vermiculite does not and should not exhibit the property of exfoliation.

On the mechanism of exfoliation of 'Vermiculite'

Girgin (2002) also tested exfoliation of the Turkish phlogopite with H 2SO 4, HCl, HNO 3 and H 3PO 4 but in contrast to H 2O 2 no response was noted. In general, the mechanism of thermal exfoliation of vermiculite is ascribed by most workers to the rapid production of steam during flash-heating which forces open the layers of vermiculite as the

Continuous energy efficient exfoliation of vermiculite through

 — Vermiculite is the name of a group of 2.1 phyllosilicate minerals that are composed of hydrated sheet silicates, which contain layers of water molecules within their internal structure, it is formed by the hydrothermal alteration of mica (Walker, 1961, Grim, 1968).When heated rapidly, vermiculite exfoliates as the interlayer water turns into …

W.R. Grace Exfoliation Facility

• The site was an exfoliation facility that processed more than 100,000 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine. Exfoliation processing of vermiculite involves heating vermiculite at high temperatures to expand it; higher quantities of asbestos are released during exfoliation processing than in other processing methods.

Exfoliation is a process where the ore is heated to approximately 800⁰C, at this point, water particles in the ore are boiled off and evaporated which then causes rapid expansion to form concertina Vermiculite particles. Vermiculite is used for many expected and also many unexpected applications world wide.
