How to Separate Gold, Silver and Platinum?

As we have noted before on this blog, gold-leaf-covered wooden frames usually contain extremely small quantities of gold. Separating that gold is usually not worth the effort and expense. However, let's pause for a moment to observe that if a gold-leaf-covered frame (or other wooden item) is burned, the gold is left behind.

I've dissolved all 3 metals together in aqua regia due to them being mixed together as $ce{Pt}$ black, $ce{Pd}$ black and gold. I isolated the gold with no problem using sodium metabisulfate, but I am struggling to separate the $ce{Pt}$ and $ce{Pd}$.

Mixing Gold and Tin Contacts

The Benefits of Mixing Gold and Tin for Electrical Contacts. There's another option to consider: mixing gold and tin contacts. You don't have to choose purely gold connectors or tin contacts. Instead, you can be selective on where and when to use each material, playing off of the advantages and benefits for each. ...

New understanding on the separation of tin from magnetite …

Therefore, this kind of tin can't be separated and recovered only by mineral processing, and tin was remained in the magnetite concentrate. Fuming processes, such as sulfurization and chlorination roasting, are practised to separate tin from middle-grade tin-bearing materials of tin-ore tailings and tin smelting slag [8]. But the iron oxides ...

1.16: Methods for Separating Mixtures

One of the approaches taken to isolate the gold from the soil was called "panning". Dirt would be placed in the pan and covered with water. After thorough mixing, the pan is gently swirled to remove dissolved material while the heavier gold settles to the bottom of the pan. The gold is then separated from the mixture of soil and water.

Gold or Tin vs Gold and Tin

You may have already read about my 50:50:50 rule when it comes to the choice using tin plated surfaces versus gold plated surfaces in connectors. This rule says tin is the more economical solution if you have less than 50 contacts (mating forces), if you can live with 50 mating cycles (contact normal forces), and if you do not expect less than 50 milliohms …

Anyone know a good way to seperate Tin from Lead? | Gold …

It will not effect tin or any precious metals in solution or it's eventual recovery. Electrorefining tin from an alloy of lead/tin is easy as long as the proportion of tin in the alloy is in the high 90% range. Low voltage, low wattage is best to stop the long "whiskers" of tin from growing and shorting the cell. HCl is used as the electrolyte.

Lead & Tin Distillation Separation-Metal Distillation

Lead-Tin distillation furnace is highly recommended for tin & lead separation. Metalcess uses multiple-stage distillation to reduce tin loss in lead vapor for better separation effect, producing crude tin (Sn >99%) and crude lead (Pb> 98%). Through fire refining, we can get high purity tin (Sn >99.995%) and high purity lead (Pb> 99.995%).

Separating gold from a LUMP of solder?

Separating gold from lead and tin is a frustrating experience, especially if you have no clue what you're doing, and how to address the problems of filtration, which will be overwhelming considering solder is the source of the material. It's true that lead solder can contain gold---especially true if the source was a wave soldering machine.

Gold is generally specified for high reliability, low voltage, or low current applications. Gold is used in high cycle applications because it's rugged and has excellent wear properties (here's example of a high-cycle connector). Tin is a lower cost alternative than gold, and has excellent solderability. Unlike gold, tin is not a noble metal.
